Chemical Society of Washington

The Retired Chemists Group

An Activity of the Chemical Society of Washington

The Retired Chemists Group is a group of scientists primarily from the Chemical Society of Washington, a section of the American Chemical Society.  The RCG addresses the needs, interests, and concerns of retired, emeritus, and other interested parties. The RCG is essentially a social group with no dues or attendance requirements. Retired and active chemists, their spouses, and their scientifically inclined friends are invited to attend any of the RCG Luncheon Meetings for which there is a nominal charge for the lunch menu itself.  The mid-week, daytime programs occur three times a year with the venues rotating among locations in Washington DC, Virginia, and Maryland.

Past programs have included scientific talks, travelogues, and tours of nearby museums and mansions.  The 2009 program began in May with a luncheon in Leesburg followed by a hands-on tour of the Smithsonian Naturalist Center.  It was followed in June by a luncheon in Maryland at which Dr. Lewis Ziska of the USDA gave a talk on climate change and food security.  The third luncheon in DC included a talk by Dr. Richard Anderson of the USDA on the health benefits of cinnamon.  Attendees enjoyed the social occasions, the food, the talks, and the docent-guided hands-on study at the Naturalist Center.  The two speakers were very informative about health, food, and climate problems.  Their presentations resulted in stimulating interaction during the following discussions.  The current Luncheon Meeting announcements are displayed on this web page.

If you are interested in receiving our announcements via the Internet, please send your name, email address, telephone number, and USPS address to: Justin Collat. If you know of a speaker or a place to visit that you believe would be of interest to RCG members, please send this information also.

Speaker: Robert Luskin, Attorney
Subject: "What do Lance Armstrong and Karl Rove have in Common?"

Abstract: From Abscam to Benghazi, every few years, Washington falls victim to scandal
derangement syndrome, with obsessive, 24/7 coverage of whatever has captured the imagination. Mr. Luskin will discuss modern Washington scandals and talk about what they have in common, their elationship to the political process, and how the criminal justice does (and does not) manage to handle the challenges they pose to fairness and justice.
